FIRST WEEK LECTURE

As a wonder the campus of the University of California Santa Barbara, I finally found my class and exect the worse. Much to my surprise Kip gave an extremely interesting lecture using power point media filled internet clips, photos from films, music, and the a wide range of artists. Walking into a huge auditorrium like Kip's assigned room and sitting down waiting for the teacher is the most stressful part of day when you realize this teacher is going to be miserable, or the teacher's is going to make my life at UCSB a better place. Kip began his discussion speaking about what defines art and how and why we define art. Kip first started off saying that art requires two things; some form of activity and some conveyance of meaning. This idea took a cord with me because the statement he made about art requiring some activity or process is true, but asrt does not have to have a direct meaning that is planned to be conveyed. More importantly than what distinquishs art from not art is, is the idea of icons and representations in the mass media. Image projection and different objects having certain repsenatioan is the basis of the US marketing system in luring in customers to conform to the mainstream
