As a precursor to the upcoming reading assignment on Duchamp, one non-art object that can be documented as a work of Art and vice versa is my cruiser skateboard. It can be seen as a piece of art as it shows its past in its present. Unless your someone who never skates who doesnt mess up your brand new skateboard, the deck of someone tells them more than that they just skateboard. My cruiser skateboard specifically can be considered a true piece of art as t contains random stickers, scratches, chips, and mud stains that can show its past and the hard times its been through. To a random person, my cruiser may just look like an ordinary board, but the true artistic function is only in effect when in reflection of its owner.
As a skateboard's utilitarian function is for the hobby of skateboarding and even as a tool for transportation, the skateboard is a special non-art object because the uses and levels of its use range so much. Whether you're practicing tricks to win money in a contest, or just taking the good old skate to feel the wind in you're hair, the skateboards utility has more than one individual function. Unlike other non-art objects like a toilet or telephone, the skateboard has infinite uses and functions that make skateboarding an art form of its own.
